The list was from the website of the Horror Writers Association (HWA). It was compiled from a survey of their members in 1996. In its introduction it said: "Whether you are new to Horror, or simply want to become familiar with some of the classics and "bests" of dark fiction, the following books are a wonderful place to begin."
